Carol Es, contemporary, self-taught artist, Los Angeles, specializing in garment patterns and oil paintings with embroidery.Carol Es September 6 - October 15, 2005 Reception:
FOR IMMEDEATE RELASE:
George Billis Gallery, L.A. will showcase mixed media paintings by Carol Es, and also a thirty-six page handmade catalog in an edition of fifty. The title, 1-SELF, suggests dual meaning of both intimate self-expression and the artist’s pattern making background in the garment industry, as patterns were often marked "1-self" for manufacturing.
Carol is a native Los Angelina and self-taught painter whose work has shown locally for several years. Her work intimately explores the tribulations of childhood trauma using pigment, manila paper and sewing pins to overcome them. Her witty psychological portraits mark her past, while serving as a release. Carol is also a recent recipient of The Artists’ Resource for Completion Grant from the Durfee Foundation.
The original book edition includes a die-cut letterpressed cover, an original watercolor drawing, 14 color images, block print insert, letter pressed quotes, and a hand-cut collar pattern, with essays by Los Angeles art critics Shana Nys Dambrot and Kristina Newhouse. These hand-stitched books are 8.5 x 8 inches, come in a box with a block print label, and will be available at the show. There are discounts available for pre-orders.
The George Billis Gallery opened in the heart of the Chelsea Art District in Manhattan eight years ago and has now expanded to the West Coast with George Billis LA. The Los Angeles gallery showcases painting, photography and works on paper by regional, as well as national artists.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
